The White River School in White River Junction, Vermont has participated in a “Girls On The Run” program for the past two years, with great success—over 30 girls participating and every one finished the end of season 5K run.
This fall, the Children’s Fund helped create a boys running program at the school, for grades 3-5. 25 boys immediately signed up for the inaugural fall season. With help from their coaches, the boys named their team the “BATS” (Boys Athletic Training) and designed a logo and t-shirts. (The BAT club name is due to the bats often found in the 107 year old school building.)
The team trained for seven weeks, doing a “boot camp” at their school and traveling to explore other running sites such as the Hanover High School track, Hartford High School Athletic Fields and hiking through the fields and up the hills of Maplerow Farm. The grant covered stipends for the coaches, running shoes for those who needed them and t-shirts for all participants with the club logo.
