Despite the bucolic beauty of the Upper Valley, child obesity, low self-esteem and risky after-school behavior are challenges for many young people in Vermont and New Hampshire. To help address these issues, the Children’s Fund established Finding Our Stride, a school-based running program for elementary and middle school students at schools where at least 30% of the kids receive free or reduced lunch. We funded 4 school programs in the fall of 2016 and will be adding at least 8 more programs for spring of 2017.
The Sneaker Fund provides free shoes and shoe fittings to children in these running programs who could not otherwise afford quality running shoes.
2016 - $5,000 to provide running shoes for all Finding Our Stride programs, on an as-needed basis (need determined by principal or guidance counselor at the school).
2015 - $2,500 to provide free running shoes for middle schoolers in our XC running program at the Indian River School in Enfield, NH, and for 3rd - 5th graders in our White River School running program.
2013 - $2,500 to support our third year providing free running shoes for middle schoolers in our XC running program at the Indian River School in Enfield, NH
2012 - $2,500 to The Sneaker Fund, to provide free shoes for needy middle schoolers in our XC running program at the Indian River School in Enfield, NH.
2011 - The Children's Fund of the Upper Valley supplied new running shoes and a free shoe fitting at Stateline Sports for all runners. The Children's fund will continue support of these programs in 2012 and beyond.
